What happens if import duties are not paid?

What happens before and after a customs non-payment return, including reshipment, store credit and refund options.

If import duties or taxes are due on arrival, pay them through the instructions provided by the carrier or customs authority. When possible, The Oblist first contacts you so the issue can be resolved before the package is returned.

If the package is returned to the seller

If duties remain unpaid and the carrier returns the package, The Oblist offers the options defined in section 9.1 of the Terms & Conditions:

  1. Reshipment — the seller sends the package again after you pay the applicable return cost and the new outbound shipping cost. If free shipping applied originally, the original shipping cost may also be due.

  2. Store credit — credit for the product value, excluding original shipping, valid for 24 months. It is issued after the package reaches the seller or, at the latest, under the timing stated in the Terms & Conditions.

  3. Refund — refund of the product value, less the applicable return cost and original outbound shipping cost, subject to mandatory consumer rights.

For EU/EEA and UK consumers validly exercising a statutory withdrawal right, the refund includes the product price and standard outbound delivery charge, less the applicable return cost, under the timelines in the Terms & Conditions.

Standard return costs

The current standard amounts stated in the Terms & Conditions are:

  • €35 for parcel returns within the EU;

  • €95 for international parcel returns; and

  • for large or freight pieces, 20% of the order value with a minimum of €150, replaced by the carrier quote when one is obtained within the stated period.

Carrier or customs storage fees may be added. If the actual cost is demonstrably lower than the standard amount, the difference is refunded under the Terms & Conditions.

If you do not reply

If there is no response within 30 days after our first notification and reminder, store credit is issued by default. While unused, that default credit may be converted on request into the refund option described in the Terms & Conditions.

What to do now

Open the carrier tracking page and follow its duty-payment or customs instructions. If the package is already returning, continue in the current chat with your order number and tracking status.

The Terms & Conditions, section 9.1, prevail if there is any inconsistency.
